Every 1 in 25 Americans have food allergies of some kind. With all the eating out we do as a nation, that's a cause of serious concern for a lot of diners. There are some new companies that have popped up to help.

Ten-year-old Sami Belkadi has severe food allergies. His mother Ariane says eating out is a trial for the family. "There are probably five restaurants that we feel comfortable going to. The restaurant really becomes a potentially dangerous place for the kids with the allergies," she warns.

But now, a slew of new companies are offering a way to help. They'll customize a card listing all your allergies…in any language…for you to hand to restaurant staff.

Belkadi says the cards are a simple way to help protect her son. "They just state clearly what the allergies are and how serious it is."

Anne Munoz-Furlong is the CEO and founder of FAAN, The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. She says, "There are companies that are trying to make that communication easier for an individual to communicate with restaurants."

A simple card made a world of difference for Kathy Sheehan when she travelled to Italy. "My server showed the cards to the chef and he came back to the table saying 'The chef said you can't eat our pizza because it contains peanut oil,'" she explains.

Sheehan says she used the cards everyday, and they were taken very seriously by restaurant staff. "I can't emphasize enough how invaluable the cards were to my health and my peace of mind."

But the allergy cards should only be the first step. "The cards should not take the place of having a conversation and asking questions about ingredients. They should only be one tool, but not the whole tool," Munoz-Furlong cautions.

People with allergies should always carry any medication they might need, and know how and where to get help in an emergency...especially when out of the country. Plus, even with the cards, it's a good idea to avoid certain foods, such as sauces, fried foods and desserts.

Research shows that you can never predict who will have a severe allergic reaction to certain food. So even those with a history of relatively minor allergic reactions should be prepared when they go out to eat.

Ensure that you have vital medical information which is instantly available to paramedics in any Emergency Situation.  A Medi Safe Alert Card has Alert Icons which can save valuable minutes before treatment.  www.medisafealertcard.com
